Introduction to MadCap Lingo
Who is it for?
This course is for translation managers, translators, or technical communicators who will be using MadCap Lingo either to manage the external translation of MadCap Flare projects, or to translate MadCap Flare projects themselves. No previous experience of working with either Flare or Lingo is required, though familiarity with basic Help authoring and localisation concepts is an advantage.

- Overview of key MadCap Flare concepts
- Understanding the structure of a Flare project
- Possible translation workflows supported by MadCap Lingo
- Brief introduction to Translation Memory, TMX files, translation segments, and XLIFF files
- Understanding the structure of a Lingo project
- Introduction to the MadCap Lingo environment
- Creating a new Lingo project from a Flare project
- Effective strategies for getting Help within Lingo
- A typical workflow for translating a project using Translation Memory
- How to translate each of the different file types (topics, snippets, index, TOC, variables, skin, etc.)
- Working with the format and marker tags
- Using the Termbase window pane
- Using the Dictionary window pane
- When and how to create Difference projects
- When and how to create Alignment projects
- Creating a Translation Bundle to send to an external translation company
- Merging a completed Translation Bundle
- Creating a translated Flare project from Lingo
- Working with backups
How is this training delivered?
This course can be presented in any of the following ways:
- Individual face-to-face coaching at your own place of work
- Individual Web-based coaching as a series of four 90-minute instructor-led interactive sessions
- Classroom-based training for groups of two to six students at your organisation's site
Introducing your trainer
Matthew Ellison has over 25 years of experience as a user assistance professional in the software industry and has trained more than 800 authors how to develop online Help. He is a qualified teacher (PGCE), a Certified Flare Instructor, and a part-time lecturer on Portsmouth University's Technical Communication MA course. Matthew presented a workshop on MadCap Flare at the 2009 WritersUA Conference in Seattle, and is a regular speaker at User Assistance Conferences in the US, Europe and Australia.
